Top 10 Flowers In Atlanta Area

When it comes to planting flowers in your outdoor space, the choices are seemingly limitless. You’ll want to consider what will thrive in Georgia, how much sun you are getting in a particular spot, and of course what is attractive to you. Here are some popular choices for flowers in the North Atlanta suburbs.

1. Shasta daisy (Leucanthemum × superbum) — Add a classic look to your outdoor space with the traditional looking shasta daisy. These pleasing perennials are native Georgia plants so they will thrive in the heat and are tolerant of dry spells. Plant them in the full sun where they will bloom in clusters anywhere from 2 to 4 feet tall. The blooms will start in the summer and with good care can last through the fall.

2. Purple coneflower (Echinacea purpurea) — Like the look of daisies but want some color? Add some purple coneflower. This herb is another native perennial that will thrive in Georgia. It produces large light purple flowers with centers ranging from golden to brown. It looks great in groups and will bloom from midsummer through fall.

3. Zinnia (Zinnia elegans)- Zinnias come in a range of varieties and are perfect for adding color to your yard. These annual flowers come in different heights so you can place them accordingly. Because they grow better in warmer temperatures and sunny conditions, Georgia’s climate provides a long growing season for them.

4. Lantana (Lantana camara) Classified by botanists as a shrub, lantana can grow 6 feet high and has pretty orange, red, pink or yellow flowers. Though it is a perennial in tropical zones, in Georgia it usually dies with frost and needs to be planted yearly. Lantana loves the sun – it can tolerate some shade but will flower less if it is planted in the shade. If you’re looking to attract butterflies to your garden, lantana is a favorite of the black swallowtail.

5. Daylillies (Hemerocallis) – Another prolific flower with a variety of colors is the daylily. There are many varieties to choose from so it will be easy to find one that fits your height and color needs. Daylillies are very hardy perennials and drought resistant so you can enjoy them year after year, although flowering may diminish after a few years.

6. Daffodils (Narcissus) – Nothing says spring like the emergence of bright yellow daffodils, although they can often be found in white and sometimes orange. A smaller version of these flowers, narcissus jonquila, are commonly known as jonquils and are very prevalant in metro Atlanta flower beds. These perennials are very robust and look best planted in clumps.

7. Elephant Ears (Colocasia esculenta) – All flowers need some foliage to set them off and Elephant Ear is a very popular choice in the North Atlanta suburbs. These giant leaved plants are tropical but do very well in Georgia. Although they are perennials in tropical zones, in Atlanta they can die in a frost so they should be planted yearly.

8. Snapdragon (Antirrhinum majus) – Snapdragons are colorful annuals which can bloom in spring and fall and last through the winter. Prefering temperatures from 40s (night) to 70s (day) they tend to stop flowering in the hot Georgia summer, but will usually pick back up again when temperatures drop. They prefer sun but can tolerate light shade. They will come in a wide variety of colors to suit your outdoor space.

9. Hydrangeas (Hydrangea macrophylla) – What would a Southern garden be without hydrangeas? These perennial shrubs have a variety of colors from pink to purple to blue which are actually controlled by the soil pH. They prefer shady spots to full sun and generally bloom from May to July.

10. Siberian Iris (Iris sibirica) – This brilliant perennial flower blooms in shades of white, blue and purple. They start blooming in the spring but are very hardy and can easily survive a hot Georgia summer. FCor best results, make sure they get plenty of sun.
